Will dermal fillers give my face the same frozen look as Botox sometimes does?
Have you been thinking that those little lines and wrinkles appearing around your mouth could be made less visible with some sort of cosmetic procedure? Maybe Botox or dermal fillers? Millions of people have these procedures every year, so why not you?
There are a number of good reasons to consider a noninvasive cosmetic procedure, especially one like dermal fillers. Sometimes called “wrinkle fillers” or “wrinkle erasers”, some of the improvements dermal fillers can be used to make around the mouth include:
- Reduce appearance of smile and laugh lines
- Add plumpness to thin lips
- Smooth crease in chin
- Improve appearance of scars
- Restore volume and youthful fullness
- Fill other static wrinkles
While Botox is very popular and effective, when not overdone, there are advantages to dermal fillers. Unlike Botox, which is a neurotoxin administered in minute doses to give the face a smoother appearance by blocking communication between the muscles and nerves, dermal fillers do not immobilize the facial muscles, which, over time in some cases, can lead to that “frozen” look. Instead, dermal fillers soften and smooth lines and creases with injections of FDA-approved Restylane Silk, a gel-like substance that restores volume to a more normal level.
Reasons to Think Twice About Cosmetic Procedures
When considering any sort of cosmetic procedure, the most important step is to have established a relationship with a healthcare professional that you trust. Many people receive dermal fillers from their dentist, so if you are a patient of Dr. Behnam Cohen at Cohen Dental Care, you are already one step ahead.
Deciding to have cosmetic enhancements should always be a personal decision and not something done to please someone else or with unrealistic expectations. There has been a lot written about that and information and guidance is not that difficult to find. That said, there is a new concern related to how our lives have been changed. There is even a name for it: Zoom dysmorphia.
Perhaps not surprisingly, all of those hours we have spent interacting with others through a computer screen instead of in person have taken their toll. Part of this has to do with being forced to stare at ourselves far more than we ever have, but it has also been exacerbated by the fact that front-facing cameras, like Zoom, tend to distort images in much the same way as the mirrors in a carnival funhouse. Not a pretty picture!
In a nutshell, for many people this created significant damage to their self-images. Once the lockdown began to lift, dermatologists reported a spike in requests for appearance-related appointments. Those requests have continued, and there is concern that Zoom dysmorphia is not going away.
Making Your Own Decision for Dermal Fillers
There are good reasons for considering dermal fillers or other types of cosmetic procedures and then there are reasons that are not so good. If you have genuinely realistic expectations about reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles around your mouth, dermal fillers may be an excellent option. The procedure, itself, is quick and can be done on a lunch break. There is very little recovery involved.
As with any type of dental or cosmetic procedure, your outcome will depend on working with only the most experienced, highly skilled professional available to make sure that you receive the treatment that is the right one for you.
