For the thousands of residents in Great Neck and Briarwood who have missing teeth or teeth that are beyond repair, getting partial or full dentures can be a life-changing event. Dentures offer a new, healthy, and complete smile. Equally important, they can provide a new sense of confidence for the individuals who sport them. If you’re thinking of getting dentures, you’ve come to the right spot. Dr. Cohen and his passionate team will be committed to creating a pair that is best suited to your needs and lifestyle.

Partials vs. Full Dentures

Modern dentistry has taken dentures to a whole new level. Today’s models are a far cry from those you might remember your grandparents having. There are two types of dentures: complete sets and partial sets. Which one is right for you depends on your situation.

Generally speaking, full dentures are needed when all your teeth have been extracted or there are not enough teeth remaining for bridgework. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are just a segment of false teeth that attach to your natural, healthy teeth. Partial dentures both keep your smile full and help avoid your remaining natural teeth from shifting. If you’re not sure which is right for you, the best way to figure out is by setting up an appointment with Dr. Cohen and his team. Your consultation will include an examination and conversation about your current oral health and your options for care.

Find the Right Partial Dentures or Full Dentures Fit for You

Keep in mind that dentures are not one-size-fits-all. No matter which path you take, these are made by experts to ensure you get the most out of your new set. The process takes a few weeks and various appointments. First, we take impressions of your mouth to better understand your mouth shape and jawline. Next, these impressions will be sent away to a lab where a model of your future dentures is created. After confirming the fit, we’ll put in approval for the real dentures and they will be on their way!

Our clinics offer both conventional partial and metal-free partial for maximum aesthetics and absolute comfort. Today’s dentures look incredibly realistic – some people may not even realize you have a set in! We’ll take time to make sure your dentures – complete or partial – are the right shade and shape to help you feel confident.

Cosmetic Partials

Cosmetic partials are light and durable. They are mostly metal free and comfortable. The best feature about these partials is that they are not as harsh or detrimental to existing teeth as the conventional partials. Conventional partials depend on surrounding teeth as anchorage with metal clasp and hooks that grab on to adjacent teeth.

After a few years, conventional partials could loosen teeth that metal clasps are hooked on which may force some teeth to be extracted.

Your Life After Dentures

Once your dentures are in your mouth, they might take some time to get used to. When you leave our office with your new smile, we will also make sure that you are aware of and comfortable with the techniques for keeping your dentures clean and in good shape.

As your mouth becomes more accustomed to them, discomfort and irritation will gradually go away. One way to improve the transition is being mindful of what you eat. Don’t worry – you won’t be stuck eating apple sauce and pudding for the rest of your life! We recommend starting out with small, soft foods, like mashed potatoes and peas, and working up to more complex dishes. To keep them safe, try to avoid hard or sticky foods.

It’s also important that you take time to maintain your dentures – just as you would with your natural teeth. We recommend that you remove and rinse your dentures after eating to get rid of lingering food and odors. When they are out, it’s wise to brush your tongue and gums. And speaking of brushing, you should brush them at least once a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and cleaner. If you have any trouble finding the right products, we can offer recommendations.

Your smile is one of your most defining features, and your teeth help you eat and communicate. You deserve to have a smile that you are excited to show off. If you’ve been dealing with tooth loss for years, these can make a big difference in the way you approach the world.
